I call today's explosion of knowledge a technological renaissance. This current historical period is not confined from Italy west to the Iberian peninsula nor limited to only wealthy aristocrats. This technological renaissance involves a much greater group of people. They are all living human beings on planet Earth with internet connection in their home, place of employment or their smart phone. Money and geography do not limit this renaissance. The only limit to leave a technological legacy is someone's apathy of deciding to not share their knowledge, comment, opinions, questions or concerns on any type of social media network.
As a Spanish high school teacher passionate about technology I see the big picture. Our current technological explosion of information will be recorded in history books and will be or should be named "technological renaissance" (I came up with this name in case any royalties need to be distributed lol). I am responsible for my students involvement in this historical era. I am responsible for getting my colleagues to collaborate and produce a town-wide, county-wide, state-wide, nation-wide, and world-wide change that will positively effect our education field. I am responsible in leaving my technological legacy.
With my smart phone I am constantly receiving and distributing information. With twitter I read and then collaborate and express my views with my followers. On Facebook I create a platform for my students to share their ideas. At a moment's notice I google information and confirm the validity of my findings by cross referencing Wikipedia and other respected sources such as newspaper websites, dictionaries, and online libraries. These activities have made me a knowledge addict ready to take part in today's current cultural movement.
When I looked up the word "renaissance" on wikipedia it described it as a cultural movement that "encompassed a flowering of literature, science, art, religion, and politics, and a resurgence of learning based on classical sources, the development of linear perspective in painting, and gradual but widespread educational reform." I can choose examples from every category that have blossomed today because of technology and list the many ways resurgence has occurred in these fields. Obviously as a teacher, I can discuss this widespread access of knowledge in the education field.
It is our responsibility to make our students prepare themselves for this resurgence of information. It is our responsibility to guide our students to become active contributors in our technological renaissance.
